Inmate Found Dead in His Cell at Maryland State Prison; Cellmate Identified as Suspect

State of MD - A 27-year-old inmate is dead following an incident inside a Maryland state prison, and investigators believe his cellmate may be responsible.

Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into the death of Kelvin Hite, who was serving time at the Roxbury Correctional Institution in Washington County.

Shortly before 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4, investigators with the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit were contacted by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit, also known as the DPSCS IIU. They were notified of an inmate death inside the facility.

The preliminary investigation indicates Hite was found unresponsive in his cell. Emergency medical service personnel responded and pronounced him deceased at the scene.

His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death.

Investigators believe Hite's cellmate was inside the cell at the time of his death. That cellmate has since been identified as a suspect in the case. Police have not formally named him, as charges have not yet been placed.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. Crime scene technicians and DPSCS Internal Investigative Unit investigators are assisting with the case.

Once the investigation is complete, it will be handed over to the Office of the State's Attorney in Washington County for review and a decision on charges.

Roxbury Correctional Institution is a medium-security state prison located in Hagerstown, Maryland. It is operated by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
