$648 Million in Federal Grants Available for Fire Departments Nationwide
National News - The federal government is putting serious money behind the people who show up when everything goes wrong. The Department of Homeland Security announced this week that $648 million is now available to help fire departments and first responders across the country get better equipped, better staffed, and better supported.
The funding comes through three separate grant programs managed by FEMA. Each one targets a different need, and fire departments on the Eastern Shore and across Maryland are eligible to apply.
The largest chunk, $324 million, goes toward staffing. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program, known as SAFER, lets fire departments use the money to pay firefighter salaries, recruit new members, and keep the ones they already have. Volunteer fire departments can also apply.
Another $291.6 million is available through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. That money can be used to buy protective gear and emergency vehicles. Departments can also put it toward health and wellness programs for their crews.
The third program, Fire Prevention and Safety, offers $32.4 million to fire departments, nonprofits, and research institutions. This funding supports studies on fire prevention and firefighter health and safety.
Robert Fenton, the Senior Official Performing the Duties of FEMA Administrator, put it plainly. "When a disaster strikes, firefighters and other first responders are often the first ones on the scene, making them a critical component of every community's emergency response capabilities," he said. "These heroes put their lives on the line every day for all of us, and FEMA is proud to support them."
The application window opens May 19, 2026, and closes June 22, 2026. That gives departments about a month to put together their applications.
Fire departments interested in applying can find the full details on Grants.gov. FEMA also has resources on FEMA.gov to help organizations submit strong applications. Live webinars are scheduled in May for anyone who has questions about the process.
