39th Delaware Coastal Cleanup Set for Sept. 19, 2026

State of DE - Volunteer sign-ups are officially open for the 39th annual Delaware Coastal Cleanup. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, and will take place at more than 40 sites across the state.

The cleanup is hosted by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Volunteers will spend the morning helping to clear litter and debris from Delaware's beaches, coastline and waterways.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Both individuals and groups are welcome to take part.

If you'd like to join in, you can register at the de.gov/coastalcleanup webpage. Registration is open now through Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 4:30 p.m.

Every year, hundreds of volunteers show up to collect trash, debris and recyclables from Delaware's shorelines and natural areas. The effort supports DNREC's larger goal of protecting the environment while keeping outdoor spaces enjoyable for everyone.

DNREC Secretary Greg Patterson praised the volunteers who return year after year. "For almost 40 years, Delawareans have been pitching in to keep our beaches, coastline and waterways beautiful," Patterson said. "These dedicated volunteers who share their time and energy have made a real difference in keeping Delaware pristine, and we invite anyone to join the effort, on coastal cleanup day as a volunteer or any day with your own actions."

While this is the biggest cleanup DNREC organizes each year, keeping Delaware's coast clean takes more than a single day. DNREC shared a few simple ways to help all year long.

First, pick up trash near your home to help keep your own neighborhood clean. Second, leave no trace when visiting outdoor spaces like state parks, wildlife areas and nature reserves, always take your trash and belongings with you.

It also helps to be prepared. Bring gloves and a disposable bag along on hikes, fishing trips or kayak outings so you can easily grab and dispose of any litter you spot.
