52 Animals Rescued From Sharptown Property
Wicomico County, MD - A routine warrant call turned into a major animal rescue this week in Sharptown, Maryland. On July 17, 2026, at about 1:07 p.m., Wicomico County Animal Control got an urgent call from the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office asking for assistance at a property in the 26,000 block of State Street in Sharptown, Maryland.
Deputies were there serving a warrant when they found dozens of dogs living inside a pole barn. The animals were kept in unsanitary conditions with no real access to water, all while dealing with the summer heat. Officials say the smell of ammonia inside the barn was overwhelming.
In total, 43 dogs were found on the property. The breeds included Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, and Jack Russell Terriers. Along with the dogs, officials also found three cats, five chickens, and one turtle.
Due to concerns for the animals' health and safety, all 52 animals were seized and taken to the Humane Society of Wicomico County for emergency care. Staff, volunteers, and the shelter veterinarian worked late into the evening to check on every animal. Each one was assessed, documented, and given the medical attention they needed.
Most of the animals have since been officially signed over to the Humane Society. Once evaluations and any necessary treatment are complete, they're expected to become available for adoption in the near future.
This case is still an active investigation. Authorities are continuing to review everything, and criminal charges are pending.
Because the investigation is ongoing, no further details can be shared right now.
The rescue was a team effort between the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, Wicomico County Animal Control, City of Salisbury Animal Control, and the Humane Society of Wicomico County.
The Humane Society says it's grateful for the staff, volunteers, and veterinary team whose quick work made sure these animals got care right away.
