Wicomico County, MD - April 2026 is National Safe Digging Month. Delmarva Power reminds residents, businesses, and contractors to prioritize safe digging. Proper practices prevent damage to critical underground infrastructure and ensure community safety.

Delmarva Power operates over 6,700 miles of underground electric lines in Maryland and Delaware. The company also manages more than 3,600 miles of natural gas pipelines in northern Delaware.

Other essential utilities, including water, sewer, and cable lines, are buried in these areas. In 2025, Delmarva Power responded to 296 incidents caused by unsafe digging.

A recent survey by the Common Ground Alliance highlights the ongoing risks. Data shows that 10 million Americans planning digging projects this year will not contact 811. This decision increases the risk of utility disruptions, costly repairs, and serious injuries.

Before breaking ground, residents and businesses must follow specific guidelines. Individuals must call 811 at least three business days before a project begins. This free service allows utility companies time to mark the approximate locations of underground lines. Property owners should confirm that all local utilities have marked their lines accordingly.

Project locations should be moved if they are too close to utility markings. If a contractor is hired, property owners must verify that the contractor has contacted 811. Work must not proceed if the utility lines remain unmarked.

Delmarva Power partners with the Exelon family of companies, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and state governors to promote National Safe Digging Month. For more details on safe digging, individuals can visit Call811.com or contact Delmarva Power at 800-375-7117.
