Attic Fire Displaces Family of Six in Easton
Easton, MD - A house fire Thursday morning left six people without a home after flames broke out inside a two-story residence on Hawkes Hill Road in Easton, Maryland.
The fire was reported at 10:41 a.m. on May 21 in the 29000 block of Hawkes Hill Road in Talbot County, Maryland. The occupant discovered the fire when he returned home and noticed smoke and flames. He called 911 immediately.
Crews from the Easton Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. A second alarm was called, bringing 25 firefighters total. It took nearly two hours to bring the fire under control.
The fire started in the attic. Investigators determined the preliminary cause was an electrical failure in that area.
The home had working smoke alarms, which activated. There was no fire sprinkler system in the residence.
Six people were displaced as a result of the fire.
The financial toll was significant. Damage to the structure is estimated at $300,000, with an additional $100,000 in damage to the contents inside according to the State Fire Marshal's Office. Total estimated losses reached $400,000.
