Barren Creek Road Finally Getting Rebuilt After 10 Years
Mardela Springs, MD - Barren Creek Road in Mardela Springs is finally getting rebuilt. Wicomico County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the project on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
The road washed out in 2016 and has been closed for nearly 10 years. Since then, people who live, farm and drive in the area have had to take other routes to get where they need to go.
The project hit a lot of roadblocks along the way. Engineering issues, environmental rules, funding and getting several government agencies to work together all slowed it down. After years of planning and talks, the work is now ready to begin.
County Executive Julie Giordano said the moment has been a long time coming. "This has been a long time coming, and I could not be more excited to see this project finally moving forward," said County Executive Julie Giordano.
"For ten years, our residents have waited for this road to be rebuilt. When I took office, I made it a priority to address infrastructure projects that had been left unresolved for far too long. Today, we are taking a major step toward delivering on that commitment."
The county says the new road will help with public safety and make it easier to get around. It is also expected to improve daily life for people in the western part of Wicomico County.
Giordano gave credit to the state and local partners who helped make the project happen. "I want to extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring this project to fruition," Giordano continued.
"I especially want to recognize Councilman James Winn for his continued advocacy and commitment to seeing this road reopened. This project is an example of what can be accomplished when we work together toward a common goal."
Giordano also thanked the nearby towns of Mardela Springs, Sharptown and Hebron. Residents and local businesses who kept speaking up for the road over the years were thanked too.
"Most importantly, I want to thank the residents who have waited patiently and never stopped pushing for this project. Ten years is far too long, but your voices were heard, and your persistence helped bring us to this moment."
The ceremony will take place on Barren Creek Road in Mardela Springs. It is open to the public and the media.
Anyone planning to attend can park at The Hardware Store, 25442 Ocean Gateway, Mardela Springs, MD. Drivers are asked to park on the eastern side of the store.
