Brush Fire Spreads to Eden Home, Causes $25K in Damage
Wicomico County, MD - A fire that started as a controlled burn got out of hand Wednesday afternoon in Eden, spreading from a brush pile to a nearby abandoned home on the same property.
The incident was reported at 1:47 p.m. on May 28, 2026, at 4109 S. Upper Ferry Road in the Wicomico County community of Eden.
According to fire officials, the property owner and workers were burning a large brush pile close to an abandoned residence on the property. The fire spread to the structure accidentally.
The Allen Volunteer Fire Company responded with 30 firefighters and had the fire under control within 30 minutes.
The home is described as a wood-framed, single-family dwelling. Damage estimates came in at $20,000 to the structure and $5,000 to the contents inside, for a combined total of $25,000 in losses.
The cause of the fire has been listed as accidental, and no arrests were made.
The case was not simply closed after the fire was out. Officials referred the matter to three separate agencies: Wicomico County Code Enforcement, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service, and the Maryland Department of the Environment Air and Radiation Division for possible violations of applicable codes and ordinances.
That last referral to the Air and Radiation Division points to concerns about open burning rules, which restrict what can be burned and how. Burning large brush piles without proper precautions can violate state environmental regulations, especially when the fire gets out of control.
Residents are reminded to check local and state regulations before burning anything on their property. What starts as a simple cleanup project can quickly turn into a costly and legally complicated situation.
