Delaware Anglers Get a Better Deal on Bluefish in 2026 and 2027
State of DE - Delaware fishing just got a little better for bluefish fans. The state's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has updated its regulations, giving recreational anglers more room to bring home bluefish this season and next.
Starting now, anglers fishing from private boats or along the shore can keep up to five bluefish per day. That is up from the previous limit of three. Those fishing on for-hire vessels, like charter boats, can now keep up to seven bluefish daily, raised from the previous limit of five.
The change brings Delaware in line with new management plans set by two regional fisheries bodies. The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Bluefish Management Board approved updated measures in 2025 after reviewing the latest data on the bluefish population.
The review found some encouraging news. Bluefish are not being overfished. The stock has not yet fully recovered to its target level, but it is close.
Scientists estimated the spawning stock biomass was at about 89% of the target in 2024.
Projections suggest the stock likely reached full rebuilt status in 2025, though that will not be officially confirmed until the 2027 stock assessment comes in.
Based on that progress, the two fisheries organizations set a recreational harvest limit of 22.02 million pounds for 2026 and 22.50 million pounds for 2027. Both numbers represent about a 40% increase compared to what was allowed in 2025.
That is a meaningful jump. And it is the reason Delaware was able to raise its daily possession limits for both years.
The updated regulations are already in effect. Anglers planning to head out this summer should make note of the new limits before hitting the water. Whether you are fishing from shore, a private boat, or a charter, the rules have changed in your favor.
