Delaware Parks Turn 75 With a 5K For Everyone
State of DE - Delaware State Parks is turning 75, and they're celebrating with a fundraiser that fits any fitness level. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control just launched the Parks for Everyone 5K Fundraiser. You can run it, walk it, or roll it, your choice.
Best part? You pick the park and the day. The virtual 5K runs anytime from June 22 through Dec. 1, so there's no rushing to make a specific date or location.
"This is another great opportunity to celebrate the diversity of our state parks and our trails while supporting all the great services we provide to the community," said Matt Ritter, Director of DNREC's Division of Parks and Recreation.
Delaware State Parks covers more than 27,000 acres across 17 parks, plus the Brandywine Zoo and the Indian River Marina. That's a lot of trails to choose from. Whether you stick to a favorite spot or explore somewhere new, this fundraiser gives you a reason to get outside.
Registration costs $35, and every participant gets a collectible 75th anniversary golf towel and an official race bib. You'll also get a great excuse to spend some time in nature. Organizers are encouraging everyone to share their adventures using #75YearsOfDEStateParks5K.
Accessibility is a big focus too. Parks offer accessible trails, beach access mats, and free use of beach chairs and Track chairs, which are motorized wheelchairs built to handle different terrain. So this event really is for everyone, just like the name says.
If you're planning more park visits this year, keep in mind entrance fees apply through Nov. 30. An annual pass might save you money in the long run. There's also a discount Annual Pass Assistance Program for folks receiving aid through a State Service Center, and free daily passes are available through local public libraries.
All the money raised goes straight to the State Park Fund at the Delaware Community Foundation. That fund supports things like school scholarships, lifeguards, and the summer concert series locals look forward to every year.
"All money raised will benefit the State Park Fund at the Delaware Community Foundation and will be used for ongoing support of our parks, facilities and great programs such as school scholarships, lifeguards and summer concerts," Ritter said.
