Somerset County, MD - A Maryland inmate has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his cellmate at the Eastern Correctional Institute. Leslie Broadway was found guilty of first-degree murder and other related charges following a three-day jury trial on March 5, 2026.

After a pre-sentence investigation, Broadway received his life sentence on June 24, 2026.

The case dates back to September 20, 2024, when Maryland State Police and Division of Corrections investigators responded to ECI for a reported homicide. Investigators learned that Broadway and the victim, Virgil Robinson, Jr., were housed together in a cell in the segregation unit.

During routine rounds, a correctional officer looked through the locked cell door and saw Robinson lying motionless on the floor. The officer also noticed liquid on Robinson's back. Broadway was acting erratically at the time and was removed from the cell.

Broadway reportedly made comments about urinating on Robinson. He also said that Bloods and Crips should not be placed together in a cell.

An autopsy later determined that Robinson died from multiple injuries. These included asphyxia, a fractured hyoid bone, and blunt force trauma to the head, neck, and torso.

State's Attorney Wess Garner prosecuted the case for Somerset County. Garner publicly thanked the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, along with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Intelligence and Investigative Division, for their work on the case.

He specifically recognized Sgt. Joseph Meier and D. Sgt. David Marquette for their roles in the investigation and prosecution.

Broadway will now serve his life sentence in the custody of the Maryland Division of Corrections.
