Cambridge, MD - A fire set by an unknown person damaged a Habitat for Humanity home under construction in Cambridge, Maryland, and investigators are now asking the public for help finding who is responsible.

The fire was reported at 403 Cardin Way in Dorchester County, Maryland. Investigators believe it started sometime between 3:00 p.m. on May 22 and 9:00 a.m. on May 28, 2026.

The damage was not discovered right away. A property manager found it on the morning of May 28 when workers arrived on site. Because the fire had already burned out, the fire department was never called.

The home is a two-story, wood-framed single-family dwelling. No one was living there at the time. Habitat for Humanity volunteers had been working on the property when the fire occurred.

State Fire Marshal investigators determined the fire started at the crawl space opening beneath the home. The cause has been classified as incendiary, meaning the fire was intentionally set.

The estimated damage to the structure is $1,000.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that builds affordable homes for families in need. Volunteers put in significant time and effort on projects like this one.

An intentional fire at a construction site like this puts those efforts at risk and delays housing for the people the organization serves.

Anyone with information about this fire is asked to contact the Deputy State Fire Marshals at 410-713-3780. Callers may remain anonymous.
