Worcester County, MD - A confirmed rabid raccoon was located in the vicinity of Old Snow Hill Road in Pocomoke, Maryland. The Worcester County Health Department has issued a public advisory regarding this incident to ensure community safety.

Any individuals, family members, or pets that have had contact with the rabid raccoon are instructed to contact the Office of Environmental Health immediately at 410-352-3234. Contact is defined as bites, scratches, or other direct physical exposure.

Residents are advised to report sick animals or those acting in an unusual manner. Reports should be directed to Animal Control or the local police department.

Additional rabid animals may be present in the affected area, so contact with wild animals must be prevented.

Pet owners should not handle their domestic animals if contact with a wild animal occurs. It is critical that all pets, especially those kept outdoors, have current rabies vaccinations. Food must not be left outdoors, and pets should not be allowed to roam freely. These practices attract wild and stray animals to residential properties.

Parents are advised to teach children to stay away from wild or unfamiliar animals. Furthermore, Maryland and Worcester County law dictate that current rabies vaccinations are required for any dogs, cats, or ferrets over four months of age.

Individuals with questions or information regarding this notice are asked to contact Environmental Health at 410-352-3234. Additional information about rabies can be found at www.worcesterhealth.org.
