Homicide Suspect Dies After Chase Ends in Harford County

State of MD - On August 7, 2026, at approximately 8:00 a.m., the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit began investigating a death near the gate at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford County. The death followed a police pursuit that started on I-95 in Baltimore County.

State police identified the driver as Charles Glenroy Smellie Jr., 41, of Forestville, Maryland. He was the only person in a 2026 white BMW 330i.

Members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force alerted state police to the pursuit. Smellie was wanted in connection with a homicide investigation in Prince George's County, Maryland.

The chase moved from I-95 onto Maryland Route 152 and into Harford County. It ended near the entrance to Aberdeen Proving Ground.

When troopers arrived, the pursuit had already ended. Emergency medical workers were on scene and pronounced the driver dead.

Police said the early investigation points to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No shots were fired by law enforcement.

Smellie was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy. The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is leading the death investigation.

Media questions about the Prince George's County homicide case should go to the Prince George's County Police Department. That investigation is separate from the death investigation in Harford County.

Troopers from the Bel Air Barrack responded to the scene. Crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division processed the area for evidence.

Maryland State Police Aviation Command also helped at the scene. Troopers from the Criminal Enforcement Division Northern Region, the Harford County Sheriff's Office and the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division assisted as well.
