The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is scheduled to conduct a series of prescribed burns. These operations will take place along the lower Eastern Shore.

They are planned from early April to mid-May 2026. The exact timing is dependent on current weather and site conditions.

Smoke may be observed in the surrounding areas by residents and visitors. All burns are conducted strictly by trained DNR personnel.

Fire lines are established in advance to ensure public safety.

Furthermore, crews are supported by appropriate equipment so that operations are carried out safely and efficiently.

Planned Burn Locations

The locations for the planned prescribed burns have been explicitly identified by the DNR. Operations will be conducted at the Furnace Town Complex, located outside Snow Hill.

Additionally, the Foster Tract Recreational Area within the Chesapeake Forest Lands, also outside Snow Hill, is included in the schedule.

Finally, burns will be executed at the Wicomico Demonstration Forest, situated outside Pittsville.

Ecological and Safety Benefits

Low, controlled flames are utilized during prescribed burns to reduce underbrush and leaf litter. Forest health is actively improved by this systematic work.

Consequently, the risk of more severe wildfires is significantly reduced. Habitat for native species, including the northern bobwhite quail, frosted elfin, and sundial lupine, is also enhanced.

Finally, the regeneration of certain native plants is facilitated by fire, as seed cones are opened and the soil is prepared for new growth.
