Maryland Man Arrested for Impersonating Police Officer During I-695 Traffic Stop Attempt
State of MD - A Maryland man is facing charges after state police say he attempted to pull over another driver on Interstate 695 using flashing lights on his personal vehicle.
Maryland State Police arrested Eric Baummer, 59, of Mount Airy, Maryland, on Tuesday following an incident on the outer loop of I-695 near Washington Boulevard in Baltimore County. He is charged with impersonating a police officer.
The arrest came after a motorist called 911 around 4:40 p.m. on May 5, 2026, to report that a black 2014 Ford Explorer had activated blue and white flashing lights and appeared to be trying to stop him. The motorist did not pull over.
According to police, the driver of the Ford Explorer then passed the motorist and moved in front of him before exiting the highway at Hollins Ferry Road. The motorist, who stayed on the phone with police, followed the vehicle to a gas station in the 4300 block of Hollins Ferry Road in Lansdowne, Maryland.
That motorist was later identified as Eric Baummer, an off-duty military law enforcement officer.
Troopers from the Golden Ring Barrack responded to the gas station and made contact with Baummer. Officers from the Baltimore County Police Department also responded to assist.
Baummer was taken into custody without incident and was the only person in the vehicle at the time.
Maryland State Police are asking anyone who may have had a similar encounter or has information related to this investigation to reach out to the Golden Ring Barrack directly. You can contact them by phone at 410-780-2700.
