Maryland State Trooper and Teen Driver Injured in Worcester County Crash
Berlin, MD - A Maryland State Trooper and a 16-year-old driver were seriously injured Sunday night in a two-vehicle crash in Worcester County, Maryland. The crash happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. along eastbound US Route 50 at MD Route 818.
As a result of the crash, the Maryland State Trooper was transported to an area hospital by ambulance and later on was flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a trauma center for further treatment. He was driving his marked patrol vehicle at the time of the crash.
The teen driver was operating a Land Rover. He was also flown to a trauma center by Maryland State Police Aviation Command helicopter for his injuries.
Troopers from the Berlin Barrack responded to the scene after reports of the crash came in. According to a preliminary investigation, the Land Rover was heading northbound on MD Route 818. The driver attempted to cross the intersection but failed to yield to oncoming traffic.
That's when the Land Rover struck the trooper's patrol vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on Route 50. Emergency crews responded quickly to help both drivers.
Several local agencies assisted at the scene. That included the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, the Worcester County Sheriff's Office, the Berlin Police Department, and the Berlin Fire Company.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Once completed, the case will be handed over to the Worcester County State's Attorney's Office, who will decide whether any charges should be filed.
