Sussex County, DE - A Millsboro man convicted of stabbing his estranged wife more than 35 times will spend the next 25 years behind bars, the Delaware Department of Justice announced.

Jeremy Powell, 45, was sentenced on May 7, 2026, following his convictions on five charges. Those charges included Assault First Degree, Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Stalking, Felony Criminal Contempt of a Domestic Violence Protection Order, and Felony Non-Compliance with Conditions of Recognizance Bond. In addition to the prison term, Powell will serve four and a half years of probation upon his release.

The case stems from an August 6, 2024, attack in Seaford. Powell attacked his estranged wife at a residence that day, stabbing her over 35 times. The Seaford Police Department arrested him the same day.

The victim survived the attack after being airlifted to Christiana Hospital for treatment. Her recovery came after what prosecutors described as a violent and terrifying assault.

Attorney General Kathy Jennings praised the work of her office and law enforcement following the sentencing. "Our DOJ trial team and law enforcement partners deserve immense praise for making Delaware safer with this sentence," Jennings said. "My thoughts at this time are with the victim, whose bravery and composure in the face of unspeakable violence is truly remarkable."

The conviction highlights the serious consequences that come with violating domestic violence protection orders. Powell faced charges not only for the physical attack but also for ignoring court-ordered conditions meant to protect the victim before the case went to trial.

Domestic violence remains a serious concern across Delaware and the greater Delmarva region. Cases like this one serve as a reminder of the dangers victims face and the importance of reporting abuse to law enforcement.
