New Castle Man Charged After Gun and Stolen Vehicle Found
State of DE - A 20-year-old New Castle man is facing three felony charges after police found a gun in his home and a stolen car in his backyard. New Castle County Police arrested Derwin McLaughlin on Monday, October 19, 2026.
The case goes back to July 2026. That is when detectives with the New Castle County Division of Police Criminal Investigations Unit started looking into McLaughlin.
Over the next few months, detectives kept working the case and learned more. That information helped them get a search warrant for his home.
On Monday, October 19, 2026, detectives served the warrant at McLaughlin's home in the unit block of Catherine Street in New Castle, DE.
Inside the home, detectives found a 9mm handgun and ammunition. Based on the charges, McLaughlin is not legally allowed to have a gun or ammunition. Police have not said why.
Detectives also checked the backyard. There, they found the chassis, or frame, of a white Dodge Charger.
Police later learned the car had been reported stolen. It was taken from Chester, Pennsylvania, back in January 2026.
McLaughlin was arrested at the scene and taken to New Castle County Police Headquarters. He now faces three felony charges.
He is charged with having a gun while being barred from owning one. He is also charged with having ammunition while being barred from owning it.
The third charge is for receiving stolen property worth more than $1,500. That charge is tied to the stolen Dodge Charger found behind the home.
After his arrest, McLaughlin went before Justice of the Peace Court 2. His bail was set at $20,000 cash.
He was not able to pay the bail. He is now being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
