State of DE - A Newark man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty to one of the most disturbing murder cases in recent memory.

On April 29, 2026, Norbert Matara, 33, entered a guilty plea to Murder in the First Degree in New Castle County Superior Court. The plea comes after a months-long investigation into the December 2024 death of Tracy Nyariki, also 33 years old.

Matara now faces a mandatory life sentence. His formal sentencing date has not yet been set.

What Happened That December Night

According to investigators, Matara went to Nyariki's Newark home on December 17, 2024, and waited for her to return. She was his ex-girlfriend.

When she arrived home hours later, Matara attacked her. He stabbed her 58 times, dismembered her body, and placed her remains inside a suitcase.

He then fled the state. Matara was found at a motel in Aberdeen, Maryland, with Nyariki's body in the trunk of his car.

Officials Speak Out

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings did not hold back when describing the case.

"The facts of this case are beyond disturbing," Jennings said. "It is difficult to comprehend this kind of violence. I am deeply grateful to our team and to the New Castle County Police who have worked tirelessly to achieve justice for the victim and her family. May it bring them some measure of peace."

New Castle County Police Chief Col. James J. Leonard III also praised the work of those involved in bringing the case to a close.

"I'm thankful for the hard work of our officers and detectives at the New Castle County Police Department, along with everyone at the Delaware Department of Justice, who carefully investigated this horrific incident," Leonard said. "Their commitment to justice and attention to detail were instrumental in securing this plea agreement."

A Community Left Grieving

Cases like this leave a mark on a community. Tracy Nyariki was 33 years old with her whole life ahead of her. She deserved to be safe in her own home.

Domestic violence situations can turn deadly, and this case is a painful reminder of that reality. Nyariki lost her life at the hands of someone she once trusted.

While no outcome can undo that loss, officials say they hope this guilty plea offers her family some sense of justice.

What Comes Next

Matara will return to court for sentencing at a date yet to be announced. Under Delaware law, a conviction for First Degree Murder carries a mandatory life sentence, meaning Matara will not be eligible for parole.

The case was investigated by the New Castle County Police Department in partnership with the Delaware Department of Justice.
