Ocean City Gears Up for Cruisin' OC - Here's What You Need to Know Before You Go
Ocean City, MD - The engines are revving, and Ocean City is getting ready. Cruisin' Ocean City is just around the corner, and thousands of car enthusiasts and visitors are expected to pour into the resort town next week.
But before you pack up and head to the beach, there are some important changes you need to know about.
A Special Event Zone Is Going Into Effect
From Tuesday, April 28, through Sunday, May 3, Ocean City will be officially designated as a Special Event Zone. That means reduced speed limits and higher fines for traffic violations throughout the area.
Under Maryland state law, certain motor vehicle violations within a Special Event Zone can carry enhanced penalties - and that includes the possibility of arrest. This isn't something to take lightly.
Parking Will Cost More Too
Starting Thursday, April 30, through Sunday, May 3, paid parking rates will increase by $1.50 per hour under Resolution 2025-10. On top of that, parking fines will be doubled during this stretch.
Enforcement will focus on prohibited areas like red curbs, fire hydrants, sidewalks, and posted no-parking zones. The goal is to keep traffic moving and make sure emergency vehicles can get through when they need to.
Plan ahead, pay for enough time, and park where you're supposed to.
Expect a Strong Police Presence
Officers from the Ocean City Police Department and partner agencies will be out in full force. Chief Raymond J. Austin made the department's position clear.
"Cruisin' Ocean City is a longstanding tradition that we are proud to host, but safety remains our top priority," Austin said. "Visitors can expect a strong police presence and strict traffic enforcement throughout the event. Reckless driving, pop-up car shows, and roadway takeovers will not be tolerated. Those who choose to engage in this type of dangerous behavior will be held accountable."
Pop-Up Car Shows Are Not Welcome
Unauthorized pop-up car shows and roadway takeovers have become a growing problem across the country, and Ocean City is taking a firm stance against them. These events put everyone at risk including drivers, spectators, and bystanders alike.
If you're watching from the sidelines, you're not off the hook either. Encouraging drivers to spin tires, do burnouts, or act recklessly is considered inciting illegal activity and can result in enforcement action against spectators as well as drivers.
Watch Out for Pedestrians
With large crowds expected throughout the week, foot traffic will be heavy. Everyone, drivers and pedestrians alike, needs to stay alert.
Pedestrians are urged to use marked crosswalks, follow pedestrian signals, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road. A little caution can go a long way in a busy event environment.
The Bottom Line
Cruisin' Ocean City is one of the area's most beloved annual traditions, and it can be a great time for everyone. Come out, enjoy the cars, and take in the event, just do it responsibly.
