Ocean City, MD - Several Ocean City Police Department officers were honored this week at a statewide awards luncheon for their commitment to keeping roads safe.

The Maryland Highway Safety Office's Zero Deaths Maryland program held its Traffic Safety Specialist (TSS) Awards Luncheon in Edgemere, Maryland. The event recognized officers across the state who have gone above and beyond in traffic enforcement and highway safety.

The Traffic Safety Specialist Program highlights officers who demonstrate advanced knowledge, training, and dedication to traffic safety. Earning this designation is no small achievement - it requires specialized certifications, hands-on experience, and a proven commitment to the work.

Four Ocean City officers received the Traffic Safety Specialist I (TSS I) designation. They are Police Officer First Class (PFC) Michael Dzurnak, Detective First Class (DFC) Austin Mora, Police Officer First Class (PFC) Anthony Calabrese, and Police Officer First Class (PFC) Timothy Chaykosky.

The TSS I designation means these officers have completed rigorous training in speed detection, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, and Traffic Incident Management. They also each have at least one year of independent patrol or traffic experience under their belts.

Three additional officers stepped up to earn the Traffic Safety Specialist II (TSS II) designation. Sergeant Nathan Kutz, Corporal Harry Miller, and Police Officer First Class (PFC) Clifford Goggins were all recognized at this level.

The TSS II designation takes things further. Officers at this level have more years of experience, have taken part in high-visibility enforcement campaigns, and have completed advanced training programs. Their areas of expertise include impaired driving enforcement, crash reconstruction, and traffic safety instruction.

Ocean City Police Chief Raymond J. Austin expressed his pride in the officers who earned these honors.

"These recognitions reflect the hard work and professionalism our officers bring to traffic safety every day," said Chief Austin. "I am incredibly proud of their dedication and commitment to protecting our community. Traffic safety is a core priority for the Ocean City Police Department, and it's rewarding to see our officers continue to grow within their careers and develop specialized skills that make our roads safer for everyone."

Traffic safety is something that affects everyone on the road - locals, visitors, and families passing through. The work these officers do helps reduce crashes, prevent serious injuries, and save lives in the Ocean City area.

The Ocean City Police Department says it remains focused on proactive enforcement, education, and training that makes a real difference on the roads. Recognitions like these show that the department is investing in its officers and taking traffic safety seriously.

Congratulations to all seven officers on this well-earned honor.
