Ocean City Reschedules Special Election Following Councilman's Resignation
Ocean City, MD - The Town of Ocean City has rescheduled its municipal special election to Friday, May 8, 2026. This change was made after Councilman Larry Yates announced his immediate resignation due to health concerns.
The election will be held from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in the Dockside Exhibit Hall. Two open seats on the Ocean City Council will be filled. Residents interested in running for a seat must file their candidacy by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2026.
"The Town of Ocean City is grateful for Councilman Yates' time and service on the City Council," said City Manager Terry McGean. "He brought thoughtful perspective and a strong commitment to the community, and we thank him for his dedication and contributions to Ocean City during his tenure."
The resignation of Councilman Yates leaves two seats open for the May 8 election. Currently, Peter Buas and Jeff Heiser are the two candidates filed for the election. Voters who wish to use an absentee ballot must submit an application by 4:30 p.m. on May 7, 2026.
Applications can be dropped off at City Hall or mailed to the Board of Supervisors of Elections of Ocean City. Forms and updated election information are available on the town's website or in person at City Hall.
The Town will provide free bus service for all users on Special Election Day. A no-fare policy for buses and ADA service will run from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. The Coastal Highway "Beach Bus" will arrive every 30 minutes. ADA service is available during these hours, but a 24-hour advanced reservation is required.
Bus stops near the Convention Center are located on southbound Coastal Highway at 41st Street and northbound at 39th and 42nd streets. Passengers can contact Ocean City Transportation at 410-723-1606 for more details.
"We encourage all eligible voters to take part in this special election," said McGean. "Providing free transportation is one way the Town is working to make the voting process as accessible and convenient as possible. These open seats are important to the future of Ocean City, and we hope residents will make their voices heard on May 8."
