Ocean City Sets Special Event Zone for Bikefest Week

Ocean City, MD - Ocean City will become a Special Event Zone starting Tuesday, September 8, and running through Sunday, September 13, 2026. The change comes as thousands of motorcycle riders arrive in town for the OC Rock & Ride Bikefest.

Speed limits will drop during this time and fines for breaking them will go up. The top speed limit in Ocean City is normally 30 mph, though some residential streets are marked lower.

State law passed in 2020 allows for tougher penalties on certain traffic violations inside these zones. Much like a construction zone, drivers who break the rules could face steeper fines or even be arrested, depending on how serious the violation is.

Residents and visitors should expect to see a lot of police officers around town during the event. Officers from the Ocean City Police Department, Maryland State Police, Maryland Department of Transportation Police, Maryland Natural Resources Police, and the Worcester County Sheriff's Office will all be working to enforce traffic laws.

Traffic will likely be heavy throughout the weekend, and normal traffic patterns could change without much notice. Drivers and pedestrians alike should plan ahead and stay alert.

Along with the Special Event Zone, the town is also putting Resolution 2025-10 into effect. This resolution raises parking rates and penalties from Wednesday, September 9, through Sunday, September 13, 2026.

The stricter parking rules target spots like no-parking zones, red curbs, fire hydrants, and sidewalks. Town officials say the goal is to keep traffic moving and improve safety during the busy week.

Police are asking spectators to keep sidewalks open for people walking and to avoid encouraging drivers to spin their tires or do burnouts. Both actions are considered dangerous and against the law, and officers will enforce these rules against drivers and spectators alike.

With more foot traffic expected, everyone is encouraged to use marked crosswalks and wait for the signal before crossing the street. Making eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road can also help keep pedestrians safe.

The Ocean City Police Department is also reminding residents and visitors that trailers and oversized vehicles cannot be parked on any street or paved public lot without a permit between May 1 and October 31. Baltimore Avenue does not allow trailer or oversized vehicle parking at any time.
