Ocean City to Honor Fallen Heroes at Memorial Day Ceremony
Ocean City, MD - The Town of Ocean City will pause to remember its fallen heroes later this month. The Town of Ocean City has announced a Memorial Day Ceremony set for Sunday, May 24, 2026, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the Firefighters Memorial, located at North Division Street and the Boardwalk.
This year's event promises to be a meaningful and memorable tribute. Mayor Rick Meehan and Brigadier General Joed Carbonell-López will both deliver remarks during the program. Brigadier General Carbonell-López serves as Commander of the 175th Wing of the Maryland Air National Guard.
The ceremony will open in a dramatic fashion. Two skydivers from Skydive OC will jump from approximately 5,000 feet while carrying the American flag. The jump is designed to set the tone for the solemn and patriotic event that follows.
Music will play an important role throughout the ceremony. The 229th Maryland Army National Guard Band, a woodwind ensemble, will perform patriotic selections during the event. The National Guard will also have a vehicle display set up on the grounds for attendees to see.
One of the most moving moments of the ceremony will be the wreath-laying tribute. Uniformed representatives from each branch of the U.S. military will carry and place a flowered wreath in front of their branch's insignia. The tradition serves as a personal and powerful way to honor those who gave their lives in service to the country.
Mayor Meehan spoke about the importance of the day and what it means to the community.
"Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation," said Mayor Rick Meehan. "As a community, we gather not only to honor their courage and dedication, but to ensure their legacy is never forgotten. We are grateful to our distinguished guests and participants who help us pay tribute to these American heroes."
The ceremony is free and open to the public. Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend and take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.
