Sussex County, DE - The Ocean View Post Office has now been closed for more than a year. The U.S. Postal Service is looking at whether to lease a different building in town instead of rebuilding on the same spot.

Delaware's members of Congress shared the update after getting a formal answer from USPS. U.S. Senators Chris Coons and Lisa Blunt Rochester and U.S. Representative Sarah McBride had written to Postmaster General David Steiner about the closed post office.

In that letter, they asked for a permanent fix and a clear timeline. They also asked for better service in the meantime and more open communication with the people of Ocean View.

The post office first closed in October 2025 for emergency repairs. That happened after problems were found with the building.

At first, USPS planned to repair the building. Then in June, the agency said more checks showed the building needed to be fully rebuilt. Work was expected to start in spring 2027 and wrap up that fall.

That plan may now change. USPS told the delegation that more engineering concerns came up.

The agency is now searching for buildings that already exist in the Ocean View area. It wants to see if leasing a new spot would work better than building a new post office on the current property.

"For more than a year, the people of Ocean View have dealt with changing plans and far too much uncertainty about the future of their Post Office," said Senators Coons and Blunt Rochester and Congresswoman McBride. "We appreciate that USPS is seriously analyzing every option to restore full postal service to Ocean View, however that looks. But residents still deserve what we asked for in our letter: a permanent solution, a clear timeline, and regular, transparent communication about how USPS intends to get there. We will continue pressing USPS until Ocean View has the reliable, fully functioning Post Office this community deserves."

USPS also gave an update on a mailbox in town. The current collection box at 220 Atlantic Avenue, Ocean View, DE will be swapped out for a bigger one.

The mail pickup time at that box will stay the same at 11 a.m. USPS first said in April that the larger box would be in place by May 30. The agency admitted the delay and said the new box should be in soon.

Residents still have options while the Ocean View building stays closed. Retail and P.O. Box services are being handled at the Bethany Beach Post Office, which is just over two and a half miles away.

Mail delivery by carriers is still running through the Sussex County Carrier Annex in Frankford.

The delegation had also asked to meet in person with Postmaster General Steiner. USPS said it is open to a meeting. It also promised to reach out to congressional staff once it has a real update on the building search.

The delegation says it will keep working with USPS, state and local leaders, and Ocean View residents. The goal is a timely, permanent fix, with the community kept informed.
