Pocomoke, MD - Visitors planning a swim at Pocomoke River State Park this summer will need to change their plans. The park's swimming pool will not open to the public this season due to a shortage of qualified lifeguard applicants.

Park officials say certified lifeguards are required to safely operate the pool. Without enough qualified candidates applying for those positions, keeping the pool open is not an option.

Communities across the country have been dealing with the same problem for several years, and it has forced many public pools to limit hours or close entirely.

The good news is that Pocomoke River State Park still has plenty to offer this summer. Visitors can explore shaded hiking trails, paddle along the Pocomoke River, fish, camp, and watch local wildlife. There is no shortage of ways to enjoy the park.

The Pocomoke River is one of the best paddling spots on the Eastern Shore. The dark, tannin-rich water winds through a cypress swamp that feels unlike anything else in the region. It is a peaceful and beautiful stretch of water worth experiencing.

Hiking trails at the park run through old-growth forest and give visitors a chance to see wildlife up close. The park is home to a variety of birds, turtles, and other animals that are easy to spot if you take your time on the trail.

Camping is another popular option for families and outdoor enthusiasts. The park has campsites available for those who want to make a full weekend out of the visit.

While losing the pool for the summer is disappointing, the park remains one of the best outdoor destinations on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore. Park staff say they look forward to seeing visitors out on the trails and the water this season.
