Report of Firearm at Pinehurst Elementary Ruled Unfounded

Wicomico County, MD - On September 4, 2026, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office School Resource Division was notified by Wicomico County Public Schools of a report from a student at Pinehurst Elementary School. The student stated they had seen an individual with what appeared to be a firearm.

The report led to an immediate response from the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, Salisbury Police Department, and Maryland State Police. Out of caution, the school was placed on lockdown under the Standard Response Protocol. This kept students and staff secured in their rooms while investigators worked.

Investigators moved quickly to secure the area and review the report. School surveillance footage from the reported time and location was checked. No evidence was found to support the student's account.

Law enforcement then searched the school building and the surrounding property. Investigators also spoke with the student who made the report. Officials determined there was no threat to students, staff, or the community, and the report was unfounded.

As a precaution, Pinehurst Elementary remained on "Hold" status while officials continued to address the situation. Under this protocol, students and staff stay in their classrooms, allowing learning to continue as normal.

Parents and drivers near the school were told to expect heavier traffic as some parents arrived to pick up their children. Motorists were asked to be patient and to follow directions from law enforcement and school staff.

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office thanked the Salisbury Police Department, Maryland State Police, Wicomico County Public Schools, school staff, parents, and the community for their cooperation throughout the investigation. Officials said the safety of students and staff remains the top priority.
