Easton, MD - Drivers who use Bay Street in Easton should plan for lane closures starting next week. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin fixing the drainage system under the road on Monday, October 26, 2026.

The work will take place on MD 33 (Bay Street), between MD 322 (Easton Parkway) and Hammond Street in Easton, MD. Crews expect the job to take about two weeks, as long as the weather cooperates.

The old pipes and drains under this part of the road have broken down. That damage has caused the ground under the roadway to wear away.

To fix the problem, crews will dig up the area and take out the old pipes and drain structures. They will then put in new pipes made of reinforced concrete, along with new precast storm drain inlets.

Once the new drainage is in place, crews will rebuild the curb, the gutter and the road surface. When the job is done, rainwater should drain the way it is supposed to along this busy stretch of MD 33.

Work will happen on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. During those hours, drivers can expect one lane to be closed, with lanes shifted and flaggers directing traffic.

Getting in and out of Hammond Street may be affected for short periods. SHA says people will still be able to reach every home and business in the area during the project.

The work zone sits next to a historic African American cemetery that dates back to the 1800s. Because of that, SHA will have an archaeologist on site to watch over the digging.
