Salisbury House Fire Displaces Elderly Resident
Salisbury, MD - Salisbury firefighters knocked down a house fire on the 400 block of Priscilla Street Saturday afternoon after police discovered smoke coming from the home during a welfare check. The fire broke out just after noon and left one resident displaced.
Salisbury Police officers were checking on the elderly occupant around 12:02 p.m. when they found a smoldering fire inside the one-story, wood-framed home. Crews from the Salisbury Fire Department arrived quickly and had the fire under control within two minutes.
The fire started in the kitchen. Investigators say it was accidental, sparked when an open flame from the gas stovetop came into contact with nearby combustible materials.
The home's smoke alarm was present, though it's unclear if it activated during the fire. Seven firefighters responded to the single-alarm call.
The elderly occupant suffered minor smoke inhalation and was taken to a nearby hospital by EMS. Officials say the hospital visit was mainly related to other underlying health concerns, not injuries from the fire itself.
Damage from the fire is estimated at $400 to the structure and $100 to its contents. One person has been displaced as a result.
