Salisbury to Flush Fire Hydrants in September

Salisbury, MD - Salisbury is getting ready for a citywide fire hydrant flushing program this September. The work will happen in two phases, running Sept. 13 through 17, then again Sept. 21 through 25.

The flushing helps keep the public water system clean and makes sure fire hydrants stay in good working order. It is a routine step the city takes to protect water quality for homes and businesses.

During the first phase, Sept. 13 through 17, crews will flush water lines in the areas marked in blue on the city's map. That work will take place overnight, between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., to help cut down on disruptions for people living and working nearby.

The second phase will cover all the remaining areas shown on the map. Flushing in those areas will happen Sept. 21 through 25, during normal business hours, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Residents and business owners may notice their water looks a little discolored during the flushing periods.

This happens because flushing can stir up sediment inside the water mains, and that sediment can move into the pipes leading to homes and businesses.

If your water looks discolored, just turn on a faucet and let it run for a short time until it clears up.

Businesses that use a lot of water first thing in the day, like restaurants or laundromats, may notice this more than others.

It is also a good idea to check your water before doing laundry during the flushing periods. Discolored water can leave stains on clothing if it is used without checking first.

The flushing program is a normal part of keeping Salisbury's water system healthy and reliable. City crews complete this kind of maintenance regularly to catch problems early and keep hydrants ready for emergencies.
