Salisbury Trash Fire Causes $7K in Damage
Salisbury, MD - A small fire broke out on the 800 block of Brown Street in Salisbury, Maryland on Saturday, July 4, 2026 causing an estimated $7,000 in damage to a home.
The Salisbury Fire Department responded to the single-story, wood-framed dwelling shortly after 12:20 p.m.
Fire officials say the blaze started when the homeowner burned a piece of paper containing personal information before tossing it into a plastic trash can outside. The still-smoldering paper ignited the rest of the trash inside the can, sparking the fire on the exterior side of the home.
The homeowner discovered the fire and called it in. Fifteen firefighters responded to the scene and had the flames under control within five minutes.
The home did have a working smoke alarm, but it didn't go off. Fire officials explain that's because the fire started in an unprotected outdoor space where the alarm system doesn't reach.
Damage was limited to the structure itself, with no reported loss to the home's contents. Investigators have ruled the fire accidental, tracing it back to improper trash disposal.
