Wicomico County, MD - A 20-year-old Seaford, Delaware man has been sentenced to jail after a drunk driving crash on a Wicomico County road killed one of his passengers more than a year ago.

Adam McGinnis was sentenced on April 24, 2026, in the Circuit Court for Wicomico County. He was convicted of Grossly Negligent Vehicular Manslaughter following a plea hearing on March 19, 2026.

Judge S. James Sarbanes, Administrative Judge of the Circuit Court of Wicomico County, handed down the maximum sentence of ten years imprisonment. All but 18 months were suspended, meaning McGinnis will serve his time in the Wicomico County Detention Center.

When he is released, he will serve five years of supervised probation with special conditions.

The crash happened on February 8, 2025, shortly after midnight. Maryland State Police responded to a single vehicle collision on Gumboro Road in Pittsville, Maryland. McGinnis was 18 years old at the time and was behind the wheel.

One of his passengers, a 21-year-old man, did not survive. He was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries he suffered in the crash.

Investigators found that McGinnis was driving between 94 and 105 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone before he lost control of the vehicle. A blood alcohol test showed his BAC was .19 grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. That is more than twice the legal limit in the State of Maryland.

At the sentencing, the victim's mother spoke to the courtroom. Her words left a mark on everyone present.

Wicomico County State's Attorney Jamie Dykes described what happened, saying, "At sentencing, the victim's grieving mother made a profound victim impact statement that displayed grace and compassion to everyone in the courtroom. Despite the depth of her loss, she transformed the moment into a plea for balance, requesting full accountability while extending the grace of a second chance for the man who took her son's life."

State's Attorney Dykes also recognized the Maryland State Police officers who worked the investigation. She specifically mentioned TFC Zack and Senior Trooper Bunger for their efforts.

Dykes also recognized the prosecutors who handled the case. Assistant State's Attorney Jeffrey Hysan, Jr. and Senior Assistant State's Attorney Lauren Bourdon were both recognized for their work.

This case is a reminder of the very real consequences that come with drunk driving. A 21-year-old lost his life on a dark road in the early morning hours, and a family is left to carry that loss every day. If you drink, do not drive. The decision to get behind the wheel impaired does not just put your own life at risk. It puts everyone around you in danger too.
