Worcester County, MD - Worcester County has a new jail warden lined up, and she's already familiar with the job. The County Commissioners appointed Shytina Drummond to lead the Worcester County Jail, succeeding current Warden Tim Mulligan when he retires this November.

Drummond currently serves as assistant warden, a role she's held since October 2020. Before that, she spent 15 years with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services at the Eastern Correctional Institution, working her way up from correctional officer to major.

Commissioner President Ted Elder praised the pick. "Drummond has demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication throughout her career," Elder said. "We are confident the jail, its employees, and the citizens will be well served under her leadership."

With more than 21 years in corrections, Drummond brings plenty of hands-on experience to the role. She's earned several professional certifications along the way and holds leadership positions with the Maryland Correctional Administrators Association. She also serves on the Local Government Justice Reinvestment Commission for the Governor's Office of Crime Prevention and Policy.

Her list of honors includes a Preservation of Life Award and a Circle Merit Award. Earlier this year, she added the MCAA President's Award to that list, recognizing her contributions to the corrections field. She also gives back by helping teach at the correctional academy at Wor-Wic Community College.

Drummond shared her thoughts on stepping into the new role. "I am honored to take on the role of warden, and I sincerely appreciate the confidence the commissioners have placed in me," she said. "I am privileged to serve alongside the dedicated staff of the Worcester County Jail and will continue supporting them as they serve our community with the utmost integrity. Together, we will continue with our mission of providing a safe, secure, and professional correctional facility, recognizing the importance of both public safety and the potential for positive change."

Drummond holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. She's currently working toward a Master of Science in Administration of Justice at Wilmington University. Outside of work, she's a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and stays active in community volunteering.

Mulligan will remain warden until November, giving the jail time for a smooth leadership transition.
