Staffing Shortages Prompt Temporary Reduction in Somerset County Sheriff's Patrol Coverage
Somerset County, MD - Effective April 30, 2026, the patrol coverage schedule of the Somerset County Sheriff's Office will be temporarily modified. Continuous 24-hour patrol coverage will be provided from 7:00 a.m. Monday through 7:00 a.m. Saturday each week.
This schedule modification is attributed to ongoing staffing shortages affecting law enforcement agencies across the region and state.
During weekend periods, a limited on-call response for critical public safety needs will be maintained by the Sheriff's Office. These specific responses will include warrant verifications and matters involving protective orders.
This operational decision was implemented following an evaluation of current staffing levels and demands. Adequate personnel must be maintained on duty to ensure deputy safety and the reliability of emergency response services.
It was determined that continuing full 24/7 coverage under present conditions would risk compromising both priorities.
Significant challenges in recruiting and retaining qualified personnel are currently being experienced by the Sheriff's Office. A nationwide decline in individuals pursuing careers in law enforcement, combined with a competitive hiring environment and rigorous certification requirements, has influenced a reduction in available applicants.
These challenges are being actively addressed by the Sheriff's Office, County leadership, and public safety partners. Ongoing recruitment efforts, regional collaboration, and long-term staffing strategies are currently being evaluated to restore full service.
Continuity of service will be ensured through close coordination with the Maryland State Police and allied agencies to minimize gaps in coverage. Residents are instructed to continue reporting emergencies by calling 911.
Non-emergency matters are to be directed to the Sheriff's Office during operational hours or handled through appropriate partner agencies.
