Queen Anne's County, MD - The former president of the Sudlersville Town Commissioners admitted in court today that he stole more than $344,000 in town funds over nearly three years.

Jonathan Keith Griffith entered a guilty plea to felony theft scheme over $100,000 in the Circuit Court for Queen Anne's County on June 3, 2026. It is the highest theft charge available under Maryland law, carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Griffith served as the president of the Sudlersville Town Commissioners when suspicions about missing town money first surfaced in July 2025. The State's Attorney's Office launched a formal investigation and pulled banking records from multiple financial institutions, including Griffith's personal accounts.

What investigators found was extensive. Between November 4, 2022 and August 25, 2025, Griffith made unauthorized debit card purchases, ATM withdrawals, counter cash withdrawals, and wrote checks to himself, draining $344,723.23 from several town bank accounts.

A large portion of that money was deposited directly into his personal accounts.

Griffith was charged with multiple counts of theft in December 2025, including the theft scheme charge he pleaded guilty to today.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 28, 2026.
