TCPS to Screen Fans for Weapons at Fall Sports Events
Talbot County, MD - Talbot County Public Schools will start screening spectators for weapons at select fall athletic events this year. The pilot program begins with the first home game on Friday, August 21.
The screening will apply to all home varsity football games at Easton High School. It will also apply to all varsity soccer games at St. Michaels Middle High School.
Everyone entering these events will need to pass through a walk-through weapons detection system. By entering the venue, guests are agreeing to the screening process.
If the system flags something for a closer look, staff may use a handheld security wand to check further. School officials say the process is meant to be quick and respectful while keeping everyone safe.
Student spectators will not be allowed to bring backpacks, book bags, or other large bags into the venue. Adults can still bring bags, but those bags will be checked during screening.
TCPS Superintendent Dr. Sharon Pepukayi shared why the district is taking this step. "We are committed to creating an environment where students can compete, families can cheer, and our community can gather with confidence," she said. "These proactive measures reflect our ongoing commitment to school safety while maintaining a positive experience for everyone attending our athletic events."
The district is asking families to help the process run smoothly. Spectators should arrive early to allow time for screening and try to limit the number of personal items they bring.
Guests are also asked to follow directions from event staff and security personnel. Anyone who needs to bring a medical device or medically necessary item should let staff know so it can be handled properly.
School officials say they appreciate the community's patience as this new safety measure gets underway. They believe the added step will help keep games safe and enjoyable for everyone who attends.
