Virginia State Trooper Injured After Driver Hits Police Vehicle on I-95 in Hanover County
State of VA - A Virginia State Police trooper was hurt early Friday morning after a driver struck a marked police vehicle on Interstate 95 in Hanover County.
The crash happened at 5:37 a.m. on May 1, 2026, at the 95-mile marker on I-95 southbound. Troopers were already on the scene working an earlier crash investigation when the second incident occurred.
One trooper was positioned in the left travel lane with emergency lights on, directing traffic around the original crash. A second trooper was parked on the left shoulder, also with emergency lights activated.
A 2021 Nissan Rogue traveling southbound in the left lane hit the marked State Police vehicle. The impact left both the trooper and the Nissan's driver with injuries.
Both were taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment. Officials said their injuries are not life-threatening.
The second trooper on the scene and the driver involved in the original crash were not hurt.
Virginia State Police are reminding drivers about Virginia's Move Over law. Under that law, drivers must move over a lane when they approach emergency vehicles with flashing lights. If changing lanes is not possible, drivers are required to slow down.
The law exists to protect first responders and roadway workers from situations exactly like what happened Friday morning on I-95.
Virginia State Police said the crash remains under investigation. No additional details about the original crash have been released at this time.
