Wicomico County Clarifies Trailer Rules for Ferries

Wicomico County, MD - The Wicomico County Department of Public Works has Issued a press release to clear up some confusion about trailers on the Upper Ferry and Whitehaven Ferry. Trailers are still allowed on both ferries, and nothing has changed about that.

The notice comes after several vehicles towing trailers made contact with ferry decks, ramps, and other equipment. Those incidents raised concerns about damage to personal property and county equipment, and they also led to rumors that trailers might get banned from the ferries altogether.

County officials say that is not the case. Trailers can still cross as long as they meet the existing weight, passenger, length, and space requirements already in place.

Wicomico County knows the ferries are part of daily life for a lot of residents, including those who need to cross while towing trailers or other equipment. The goal of this notice is just to explain how conditions can affect that process.

Tidal conditions can change the angle of the ferry ramps throughout the day. Depending on a trailer's length and ground clearance, certain tides can make it riskier to enter or leave the ferry safely.

Because of this, ferry operators have the final say on whether conditions are safe for vehicles towing trailers to board. If the tide makes it unsafe, access for certain vehicles or trailers may be temporarily restricted until conditions improve.

Drivers should also keep in mind that turnaround space near the ferry approaches is limited. If access gets restricted while you are already headed that way, there may not be an easy place to turn around, so planning ahead matters.
