Wicomico County Gets $3.35M Grant for New Library
Wicomico County, MD - Wicomico County is getting a major boost for its public library system. The Maryland Board of Public Works just approved a $3,353,000 grant to help turn the former Ward Museum building into the new Paul S. Sarbanes Library at Schumaker Pond.
The funding was approved on June 18, 2026, through the County Library Capital Project Grant Program. It's part of a larger statewide push to invest in public library infrastructure.
For Wicomico County, this means a big step forward in modernizing library services. Residents can expect more educational tools, better technology access, and stronger community resources once the project is complete.
County Executive Julie Giordano called the grant a major win for the community. "This investment is a tremendous win for Wicomico County and for the thousands of residents who rely on our public library system every year," she said.
Giordano added that the new branch will open up more opportunities for local residents. "The future Paul S. Sarbanes Branch will provide expanded opportunities for learning, workforce development, technology access and community engagement while preserving and repurposing an important community asset," she said.
The plan is to renovate the old Ward Museum building into a modern library space. It will be designed to meet the changing needs of county residents for years to come.
Once finished, the branch will offer better accessibility and more room for programs. It will also include upgraded technology and added resources for kids, families, students, and lifelong learners alike.
Giordano emphasized just how valuable libraries are to a community. "Public libraries are among the most valuable investments a community can make," she said. "They serve as centers for education, innovation, workforce training and civic engagement."
She added that this grant sets the county up for long-term success. "This grant ensures that Wicomico County residents will have access to a modern facility that can serve our community for generations to come," Giordano said.
More details about construction timelines and project planning are expected soon. Stay tuned for updates as this exciting project moves forward.
