Wicomico County Secures $100,000 Grant for New Library Bookmobile
Wicomico County, MD - Wicomico County is getting a boost when it comes to bringing library services closer to home. The Maryland Board of Public Works has approved a $100,000 grant to fund the purchase of a brand new bookmobile for the county's library system.
The funding is being administered through the Department of General Services. It will allow the county to move forward with acquiring a modern, fully equipped mobile unit designed to bring books and resources directly to residents.
The bookmobile is expected to reach people in rural and underserved areas who may not have easy access to a physical library branch. It will also support outreach to schools, senior communities, and neighborhoods across the county.
County Executive Julie Giordano expressed her enthusiasm for the news.
"This is a tremendous win for Wicomico County," Giordano said. "A new bookmobile means greater access to books, technology, and educational programming for residents who may not otherwise be able to visit a physical library branch. We are grateful to the Board of Public Works for recognizing the importance of this investment in our community."
The new bookmobile will function as a mobile extension of the county library system. It will offer books, digital resources, and community programming to residents throughout the area.
The goal is to help close gaps in access to information and services for those who need it most.
The grant also reflects a broader commitment from the state of Maryland to invest in local infrastructure and educational programs. Initiatives like this one are aimed at improving quality of life and expanding opportunity for Maryland residents.
The bookmobile is expected to serve a wide range of community members. From children looking for their next favorite book to seniors seeking digital resources, the mobile library aims to meet people where they are.
This type of investment can make a real difference in communities where transportation or distance creates barriers to accessing public services. A bookmobile removes some of those barriers by bringing the library to the people rather than requiring the people to come to the library.
County officials have not yet announced a specific timeline for when the new bookmobile will be purchased or when it will begin serving the public. More details on the procurement and deployment process are expected to be shared in the coming months.
