Wicomico County, MD - Wicomico County is getting a boost for its parks and playgrounds. The Maryland Board of Public Works approved more than $520,000 in state funding for local projects at its meeting on August 19, 2026.

The money comes from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Community Parks and Playgrounds Program. It will support three separate projects across Wicomico County.

Willards Town Park will receive $149,674. That money will pay for new bleachers, picnic tables, benches and trash cans for the town park.

Gordy Park in Delmar will get $70,500. The funds will go toward new playground equipment, a refurbished skateboard ramp and a new gazebo.

The Town of Delmar is also getting funding for a second project. The Mason Dixon Sports Complex will receive $300,500, the largest award of the three.

That money will go toward lighting improvements for Fields 1 and 3 at the sports complex. The upgrades are expected to expand how much the fields can be used.

County officials say the improved lighting will also create more chances for youth sports and community activities. It stands out as one of the bigger investments among the three approved projects.

Added together, the three projects bring more than $520,000 to parks in Willards and Delmar. The awards were approved by the Maryland Board of Public Works at its August 19 meeting.

Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano spoke about the funding. "Investments like these make a real difference in the quality of life for our residents," she said. "Our parks and recreational facilities are places where families gather, children play and our communities come together. I am thrilled to see these projects receive state support and proud to see continued investment in Wicomico County."

Giordano said the county plans to keep pushing for more funding like this. "These awards demonstrate what can happen when local and state partners work together to invest in our communities," she said. "We will continue advocating for resources that improve our parks, strengthen our communities and provide residents with first-class recreational opportunities."

All three projects were approved through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Community Parks and Playgrounds Program. The program continues to fund upgrades to parks and recreational facilities across the state.
