Wicomico Reuses Stadium Lights at WinterPlace Park
Salisbury, MD - Wicomico County has a new plan for old stadium lights. Lighting once used at Shorebirds Stadium is getting a second life at WinterPlace Park.
The move will create the first lighted athletic field on the east side of the county. It's a simple idea with a big payoff for local families.
Instead of retiring the fixtures, the County saw a chance to put them to good use again. The lights will move to WinterPlace Park, where they'll serve the community for years to come.
This upgrade means a lot more than just brighter fields. Evening practices, games, tournaments, and community events all become possible. Youth leagues and recreational groups will also get more scheduling flexibility.
Families on the eastern side of the county stand to benefit the most. They'll have easier access to quality athletic facilities closer to home.
Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano called the project a big deal for local kids and families. "This is a tremendous win for our community," she said. "Every child deserves access to safe, high-quality places to play, regardless of where they live in our county. By repurposing these lights from Shorebirds Stadium, we are making a smart investment that stretches taxpayer dollars while creating new opportunities for youth sports, families, and community events. WinterPlace Park has always been a valuable community asset, and these improvements will make it an even greater destination for generations to come."
The project fits into the county's larger goal of improving parks and recreation across the board. Officials want every region to have access to modern facilities, not just certain neighborhoods.
With the new lighting, WinterPlace Park will offer more hours of playtime beyond daylight. That means more programming options and fewer scheduling headaches during busy sports seasons.
County leaders thanked everyone who helped make the project happen. They're looking forward to seeing WinterPlace Park grow into an even busier hub for youth sports and community life.
