Wilmington Man Charged After Shotgun Incident
State of DE - On Saturday, August 15, 2026, at approximately 5:10 p.m., officers from the New Castle County Division of Police responded to the Graylyn Crest community for a report of a man walking along the road and shooting a shotgun. Officers gathered a description of the suspect before arriving on scene.
Police found the man sitting on a swing in the front yard of a home in the 1800 block of Graywell Road. He was unarmed at the time and was taken into custody without incident.
Officers identified him as 64-year-old Kevin Smith of Wilmington. Investigators determined that Smith had shot at a camera attached to a sign in the area, damaging it.
The camera turned out to belong to the Delaware State Police. Police say Smith also fired the shotgun within the residential community, putting nearby homes and residents at risk.
A shotgun and shotgun ammunition were later recovered from inside Smith's home. He was taken to New Castle County Police headquarters and charged.
Smith faces two felony counts of Reckless Endangering in the First Degree. He also faces misdemeanor charges of Criminal Mischief Under $5,000, Possession of a Firearm While Under the Influence, and Discharging a Firearm in an Area of an Occupied Dwelling.
Smith was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11. He was released on $3,500 unsecured bail.
