Worcester County Hosts Hearing on 2026 Comprehensive Plan
Worcester County, MD - Worcester County residents will soon get a chance to weigh in on the future of their community. The Planning Commission is hosting a public hearing on the 2026 Comprehensive Plan, and officials are encouraging everyone to attend and share their thoughts.
The hearing is set for July 9 at 1 p.m. It will be held at the Worcester County Government Center in Snow Hill.
The Comprehensive Plan acts as the county's long-term guide. It shapes decisions on land use, housing, transportation, environmental protection, infrastructure, and economic development for years to come.
This update is a big deal. It marks the first full revision since March 2006, with only minor amendments made in 2010 and 2011.
Development Review and Permitting Director Jennifer Keener spoke about the work that went into the plan. "Following years of public outreach, community meetings, surveys, stakeholder engagement, and work sessions with the County Commissioners, the Planning Commission is now presenting a final draft plan for public review and comment," Keener said.
She also noted that community input shaped the final product. "The Planning Commission has made edits to the plan that reflect State comments and public feedback on several topics important to the community," Keener said.
Some of the most notable changes are found in the Housing Chapter. It has been updated to reflect new State guidance on fair housing.
The Land Use Chapter also saw changes. It now includes a modified approach to the county's E-1 District.
So, what happens after the July 9 hearing? The Planning Commission will review any additional public comments received and may make further revisions to the draft.
Once that step is complete, the plan will move forward to the County Commissioners. They will hold their own separate public hearing before considering formal adoption.
That hearing date hasn't been set yet. County officials say it will be announced at a later time.
Residents who want to review the draft plan before the hearing can do so online. The full document is available at worcestermd.gov/comprehensive-plan.
This is a great opportunity for community members to have a real say in how Worcester County grows. Whether it's housing, roads, or protecting natural resources, your voice matters in shaping what comes next.
