Worcester County, MD - Worcester County is gearing up for one of its most beloved community traditions. The Worcester County Recreation and Parks annual Fishing Derby is set for Friday, May 16, 2026, and it is a free event the whole family can enjoy.

The derby will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Newtown Park Pond, located at 2001 Groton Road in Pocomoke. Registration opens that morning at 8:00 a.m., giving families plenty of time to get signed in before the fun begins.

The event is open to children ages 15 and under. There is no cost to attend, and lunch is also provided free of charge to all participants.

Kids will need to bring their own fishing rod and bait. Parents and guardians are asked to be present to help their child throughout the event. It is a great opportunity to get outside and spend some quality time together on the water.

Following the derby, awards and lunch will be held at the Newtown Park pavilion starting at 11:30 a.m. It is a nice way to wrap up the morning and celebrate the young anglers who took part.

Families do not have to wait until the day of the event to sign up. Preregistration is available online at www.worcesterrecandparks.org, which makes it easy to secure a spot ahead of time.

If you have questions about the event, you can reach Joe Tolbert at 410-632-2144, ext. 2505, or by email at jtolbert@worcestermd.gov. For a full list of upcoming special events from Worcester County Recreation and Parks, visit www.playmarylandscoast.org.
