Worcester County, MD - Worcester County has a new face in its Finance Office. The County Commissioners have appointed Seth Place as the county's new deputy finance officer, bringing nearly a decade of accounting experience to the role.

Place is a certified public accountant with more than nine years of experience in public accounting. His background includes tax work, client accounting and advisory services, and financial reporting and analysis across private, nonprofit, and government sectors.

Commissioner President Ted Elder praised the hire, saying Place's mix of expertise and dedication will be a strong fit for the county. "Seth brings a combination of financial expertise, leadership, and commitment to public service that will serve Worcester County well," Elder said. "As the county continues to modernize operations and strengthen its financial stewardship, we are confident Seth will play an important role in helping us meet those goals, while serving the residents with professionalism and integrity."

Before coming to Worcester County, Place worked as a supervisor at PKS & Company, P.A. There, he managed more than 100 client accounts and helped roll out process improvements that boosted efficiency and accuracy.

He built his foundation in tax compliance and financial reporting during that time, following an earlier stint as a staff accountant at CG Accounting Group from 2017 to 2021.

Place says he's looking forward to getting started. "I'm excited to join Worcester County and support Finance Officer Starzhevskiy in the work of the Treasurer's Office. My background in public accounting and financial reporting translates well to the duties of this position. I'm grateful for the confidence the County Commissioners have placed in me. The Treasurer's Office plays a large role in county operations, and I'm looking forward to contributing to its continued success," Place said.

Place's path to finance wasn't a direct one. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Maryland Global Campus, along with a degree in Secondary Mathematics Education from Lock Haven University. He actually started his career teaching math at Stephen Decatur Middle School from 2015 to 2017 before moving into accounting.

Outside of work, Place stays involved in the community. He serves as Treasurer on the Executive Committee for Coastal Hospice.

As deputy finance officer, Place will help lead the planning and coordination of the Treasurer's Office, supporting the team that manages the county's financial operations day to day.
