Baby Millie Is Fighting Hard: Community Support Needed for Local Family in Crisis

A local family is living every parent's worst nightmare after their 1.5 year old daughter was rushed by life flight to Nemours Children's Hospital. Little Amelia, lovingly called Millie, is battling septic pneumonia and strep. She is currently intubated and under heavy sedation as doctors work to save her life.

Despite how serious things are, Millie has been showing signs of progress that are giving her family hope.

Her parents shared that she is responding to treatment, and the cardiomyopathy caused by sepsis is greatly improving. She has already been weaned off one major medication and is close to coming off the second. Her blood pressure is stable, and her labs are beginning to show signs of recovery. At this time, another blood transfusion does not appear to be needed.

One small moment stood out above the rest. While her nurse was brushing her teeth, Millie scrunched her face and moved her arms and head just a little. It was a tiny gesture, but to her family, it was a powerful reminder that their sassy girl is still in there fighting.

Then came a big day. On April 27, 2026, Millie had her chest tube removed, along with her arterial line and central line. Huge milestones. She has also been weaned down on respiratory support and is now on no oxygen at all, with her oxygen levels looking beautiful.

Still, the road ahead is not without its challenges. Millie is currently experiencing ICU delirium, which can happen after a child has been very sick, heavily sedated, and in the ICU for several days. It can cause confusion, trouble focusing, and a child not quite acting like themselves.

Right now, Millie is not talking, is showing very few voluntary movements, and is unable to balance sitting up or even hold her head up. Doctors have reassured the family that this is temporary, but her parents say it is really hard to watch.

The medical team is focused on several priorities moving forward. Those include helping her brain recover from the delirium, continuing strong antibiotics to treat the necrotizing pneumonia, monitoring a blood clot in her right leg, and completing a speech and swallow evaluation once the delirium improves so the feeding tube can be removed and she can start eating and drinking again.

While Millie fights in the hospital, her parents, Haley and Ray, are fighting battles of their own.

Haley spent over five years working with special needs students in Wicomico County before stepping down due to ongoing medical emergencies. She currently works as a substitute in Worcester County, but does not have paid time off and cannot work during this time. Ray owns and operates his own HVAC business, which also means no paid leave as he stays by his daughter's side.

At home, three other children are waiting for them too.

This family needs our community right now. Any financial support you can offer would help ease even a small part of the burden they are carrying. If you are unable to donate, please share this article and keep Millie and her family in your prayers.

Every prayer, every share, and every dollar makes a difference. Let's show this family what the Eastern Shore community is made of.
