If you're a fan of recreational or charter boat fishing for striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries, you need to be aware of a new rule just announced by the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Starting on May 16, 2024, striped bass will have a new size limit. The minimum size you can now catch is 19 inches, and the maximum length is 24 inches.

Take note, fishing enthusiasts, because this rule will apply to the entirety of the 2024 striped bass summer and fall season. It's applicable from May 16, 2024, to July 15, 2024, and then again from August 1, 2024, to December 10, 2024.

Remember, all other rules still apply. This includes the emergency regulation, which stipulates that all Chesapeake Bay and tidal tributaries are off-limits for targeting striped bass from April 1 through May 15.

Similarly, the Susquehanna Flats, Susquehanna River, and Northeast River are also off-limits for targeting striped bass from April 1 through May 31.

If you're wondering why this change is happening, it's all part of implementing the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Striped Bass.

The new regulations are designed to protect and manage our fishery resources. This rule change affects all individuals who enjoy catching striped bass recreationally in the Chesapeake Bay area and its tidal tributaries, including the Maryland tributaries of the Potomac River.
