ARREST MADE IN RELATION TO TUESDAY NIGHT'S SHOOTING AT A DELAWARE HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME

Sussex County, DE - Delaware State Police have apprehended a 15-year-old student following a shooting at Sussex Central High School on Tuesday night. The shooting took place at Sussex Central High School, located at 26026 Patriots Way in Georgetown, DE, on February 27, 2024.  Police were called to the scene during a basketball game, in the school's parking lot, where authorities found multiple spent shell casings.  There were no injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.

Thanks to the strategically placed surveillance cameras at the school, Delaware State Troopers were able to quickly identify the student responsible for the shooting. With the cooperation of the young suspect's parents, an arrangement was made for the teenager to surrender at Troop 4.

The 15-year-old, whose identity is being withheld due to their age, has since complied and has been charged with Possession of a Firearm in a Safe School Zone, Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Deadly Weapon by Persons Under 18, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, and Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony.

Following arraignment at Justice of the Peace Court 3, the student has been committed to the Stevenson House Detention Center on an $82,000 secured bond. 

This incident highlights the grim reality of violence within our school systems and sparks fresh concerns over the safety of our children.
